Project Frame Wall

Here is the view from my couch*:

I mentioned before that this new apartment is my first time to really be able to decorate with a cohesive theme. For the first time since we've been married, we have a small amount of cash to play with.

Emphasis on the small,
which means I get to be creative and bust out various DIYs to make our apartment a home.

First project, my frame wall:

Stats:
3 thrift stores
8 frames
2 mirrors
1 can of gold spray paint
Total cost: $16 (paint was previously purchased)

How to make it happen:
Make like a bandit at thrift stores, grabbing any cheap frames with potential. Spray paint all those that aren't the right color (we painted 4 of them). Rip out all the backs and glass, except for the mirrors. Arrange frames on the floor and take a picture of them. Hang up frames to wall by using picture as reference when hanging frames.
Step back, look at wall, and bask in the awesomeness.

When I told Spencer I wanted to put empty frames on the wall, he was like, huh?
But once he saw the finished project, he bowed down to my creative genius.
Therefore, I officially declare Project Frame Wall a success.

*Sorry for the crappy photos - we have the most poorly lit apartment ever.

Preview

I was homemakin' it up this weekend, yo.

I turned a whiteboard into a chalkboard, dyed my white skinnies yellow, baked Janssen's strawberry bread, then died in a fit of joy while eating said bread, made this oh-my-delicious cake (thanks to Saskia who told me about it!), hung up like a bajillion frames, and then, best of all, used my first-ever freezer paper stencil to create this t-shirt with Kaitlyn:

Thursday night can't come soon enough.

AmErica

Cardigan: thrifted, Shirt/Wedges: gift, Pants: F21

Once I bought my red pants, this outfit was inevitable.
So inevitable that it happened twice.

And yes, I look like an America flag, but considering that people frequently think my name is America, I'd say that's fitting.
Apparently, "I'm Erica" sounds like "America."

Bah.

Open to Interpretation: Victorian

I squealed out loud for a full 5 minutes once I saw this week's OTI inspiration.
By the way, Kayla, Spencer says you owe him a new pair of eardrums, and this is why:

Anne Shirley is literaturely my favorite character ever. Maybe because I too was always getting into scrapes, loved books, and was a hopeless romantic, I felt like she and I would be bosom buddies, even if I have yet to know what an "alabaster brow" is. However, I was a bit confused as to how interpret her sartorially, so I went with a Victorian Era-themed outfit .

Blouse/skirt: thrifted, Shoes/tights/bag: gifted, Belt: Target
At least I think this is Victorian-ish. Let me break it down for you:

1. Herringbone-patterned wool skirt
2. Oxford shoes
3. The shirt? right?
4. The modern "pompadour" a.k.a. my pinned-back bangs

I really wish I had puffy sleeves to make Anne proud, but alas! She and I can mourn our lack of puffy sleeves together while we drink cherry cordial.

Now go see if Kayla had puffy sleeves. (Amy sat this round out.)

P.S. Next round (in 2 weeks) is another Open to Interpretation link-up! Hope you join us!

Because she asked

Meredith tagged me in this question thing I've seen going around the interwebz, and when she says jump, I say how high.

One of my favorite photos of us.
So here's what I gotta do:
 1. Post these rules.
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 things about yourself/your life .
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post.
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them.
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them that you've tagged them.

My mom and all my sisters in August 2009.
11 things about me:

1. I was born in Texas and have lived in Texas, Georgia, Alabama (the state I call home), Utah, Massachusetts and New York.

2. If I could, I would be a life-long student. The only sorta-sad part about marrying Spencer was that it meant I had to graduate college a year early, meaning I couldn’t do my desired minor (Spanish) or take all the extra classes I wanted to.

3. I get car sick but only if I read in the car for a long time or in Massachusetts or if I’m in New York. I never got car sick in Utah or Alabama. Stupid, skinny, windy roads!

4. In high school, I frequently stayed home to read a book rather than go to parties. Or I watched chick flicks with my friends. Yup, I’m cool.

5. I have played soccer my entire life except for the past few years I’ve lived in New York, and I sorely miss it.

6. I highlighted my hair all throughout high school and college and only because my dad told me it would look good. I said sure, I’ll do it…if you pay for it. He did, and it did look good.

7. My voice is so low that I can easily sing tenor by copying Spencer. Actually, we realized that our vocal range differs by just 2 notes (i.e. my lowest low is just 2 notes off from his lowest low).

8. I’ve had glasses since I was 8 years old, so I will never understand the allure of fake glasses.

9. I didn’t learn to dive until I was 19-years-old, even though I’ve been swimming since I was a toddler. I only learned because my then-six-year-old sister learned. She was and is a better diver than me.

10. I always wanted an afro, and I finally got one in 2010, if only for a few hours. I want to get another one so bad!

11. I.love.food. But if you follow my Twitter, you already knew that.

That's my real hair.
Now the questions that Meredith asked me:

1. What’s the best thing you ever ate? A vanilla soft-serve cone from Mister Softee dipped in the cherry coating on a hot summer day. And it continues to be the best thing every time I eat it. Janssen knows what I mean.

2. Do you prefer the radio, iPod, or a CD while driving? I haven’t driven consistently since I’ve moved to New York, but I prefer a CD. I used to make mixes for my sister and I, and we’d dance in the car on the way to school and soccer practice.

3. What’s your most prized possession? As a person who routinely throws things away, having any prized possession is a big deal, and it is definitely my engagement and wedding rings.

4. What’s your fave ride at Disneyland? Well, I’ve never been to DisneyLAND because anyone who knows where it’s at goes to DisneyWORLD. And my favorite ride there is Rockin’ Roller Coaster.

5. What’s your favorite clothing trend from your lifetime? Grandpa cardigans! I love loose, slouchy layers, so these just speak to my soul. And cute flats. My feet thank you, inventor-of-ballet-flats.

6. What’s the best road trip you ever took? There are like a bajillion ties for this one because I’ve taken a lot of road trips. The top contenders are when we drove from Alabama to Cape Cod and visited church history sites in Ohio and New York on the way up (saw Donny Osmond in the Hill Cumorah pageant!), my seminary trip as a high school freshman from Alabama to Nauvoo, and when Spencer, my sister and her husband caravanned across the country to move from BYU to New York and Boston, respectively.

7. What’s the first song you remember knowing all the words to? Not including church songs because I think I was born knowing those, it’s a tie between “Love Fool” by the Cardigans and “Ironic” by Alanis Morisette. I still love both of those songs.

8. What was your favorite year of high school? Oh senior year, hands-down! We were the kings of the school, I finally dated this guy I had liked for a while (not Spencer – what!), our soccer team did well, and I got into BYU with a scholarship.

9. What did you want to be when you grew up when you were a little kid? I wanted to either be a physical therapist or an astronaut. Now I know that I would be terrible as either. I love having a desk job.

10. What’s your go-to meal to make? If I’m home alone, I make pita pizza because I can eat pizza everyday. If Spencer is with me, I sautee some sliced peppers and onions, throw that in jarred sauce and toss it over pasta.

11. What’s the first chapter book you ever remember finishing? Baby-sitter’s Club, of course! I was six-years-old and I thought 13-year-olds were SO OLD. Now, I’m like, why are these 13-year-olds dating!?!?!

Now my questions for ALL of you!

1. What is your favorite childhood tv show?
2. What is your dream vacation spot?
3. What is your biggest fear?
4. What is the best meal/food you ever cooked?
5. If you could date one celebrity for a day, who would it be?
6. Who is your favorite author?
7. You are on a desert island and you only get 3 items - what are they?
8. You are on a dessert island and you only get 3 desserts - what are they?

9. What is your favorite animated Disney movie?
10. What was the best day of your life?
11. Why do you blog?

Seriously, all of you. Anyone who wants to, please, answer these and let me know because I really want to get to know my readers better. But so no one can claim I coped out, I officially tag Grace, Heidi, Rebecca, Preethi and Janssen. (and no pressure to those "officially" tagged.)

No Dumping

Oooo - I had quite the weekend! Spencer and I went to 4 thrift stores and rounded up 10 - 15 frames to use for decorating (all for $33!). I'm SO excited to show you how we are using them all, but until then, here's a shot of the gem we hung up in our bathroom:

Keepin' it classy, Upper East Side.

P.S. I started my training for the Brooklyn Half-Marathon today! It was rough waking up early, but I was rewarded with watching the sunrise on the Jackie O. Reservoir.

Hair-um Scare-um

With the resurgence of thick eyebrows, I felt that my own were woefully skinny. Terrified that I over-plucked, I decided to let my eyebrows grow in with the start of the new year.

This is what they look like after 2 months of growth:
Sorry for this creepy close-up, but now you know how blonde my lashes are.

Which is eerily close to the way they looked before I let them grow in:
from this post
I guess I'm doomed to a lifetime of looking surprised.
